APS Teacher Scientist Alliance Institute ________________________________________ This message is for the scientists among us. Through the contact of Helen Quinn at SLAC, I was contacted by Carol Balfe of Oakland about the "APS Teacher Scientist Alliance Institute". The leader of this project is Dr. Ramon Lopez (lopez@APS.org). I have a one-page fax describing it and will summarize it briefly here. The Elementary Science Education Institute for scientists is intended for about 40-45 scientists from all over the country (Lead Scientists) interested working with the local school district, in our case Oakland (but the Lead Scientist can be from anywhere in the East Bay). The program will educate scientists about elementary school education issues and recent material. The first training workshop is January 7-11, completely paid for by APS. Such trained Lead Scientists will then become local contacts and leaders of 1-day workshops with local scientists and engineers who work with elementary school teachers. [Added in proof: The workshop in January will be somewhere in the Washington, DC area - DC itself, Virginia or Maryland. Ramon is working on finalizing the exact location.] If you are interested OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO MAY BE, please contact me, or Carol Balfe 510-530-7893 balfe@dnai.com We will be happy to fax you the more detailed information.
