Date: Wed, 11 Oct 1995 17:38:51 -0700 From: kstreet@holonet.net (Karen Street) October 3 meeting and plans for future ______________________________________ Five teachers and a lab scientist met together at a potluck October 3 to talk about teaching. The teachers teach at very different kinds of schools; there was a range of students as well as a range of curricula. Some taught physics as a 9th grade topic, others didn't introduce it until the 12th grade. We all deal with questions about the emphasis (time - there isn't enough) to give to labs, writing, etc., whether to touch broadly on important topics or emphasize a few. Great food and great conversation! Plans for the future: * October 28 - teachers interested in walking together at the LBNL tour will meet together Saturday morning. Does someone want to coordinate this? For local teachers: the lab scientists give students wonderful tours. Come see what projects they're working on now. These tours are open to the larger community; let your students and friends know as well. * AAPT meeting in San Jose Friday - Saturday November 3 - 4. Invite a fellow teacher and bring your students. Local host is Brian Holmes, (408) 924-5255. Dues are $10/year, registration fee is $5, free to new timers. The theme is optics; bring your optical demonstration to show 'n' tell or dress as your favorite optical scientist. Featured speaker is Joe Jordan of NASA Ames, talking about optical phenomena in the atmosphere. Friday Social >from 7 to 10 PM features a lecture/recital on the Physics of Music and the Music of Physics by Brian Holmes. Friday afternoon there will be a LASE (Laser Applications in Science Education) workshop; for more information contact Gareth Williams (408) 924-5248 or gwilliams@sparta.sjsu.edu If you'll miss the meeting but want to pay your dues, send them to Dennis Buckley, Liberty High School, 850 Second St., Brentwood, CA 94513 * Friday, November 3 Art Fortgang and Andria Erzberger present a workshop on Teaching Physics with Toys. December 2, they will give a workshop on the TI-82 graphing calculator and calculator-based labs. Cost is $12 - 30. Call Andi at (415) 328-4116 for more information. * November 7, Tuesday - teacher potluck at 1721 Rose St., 7 - 9 PM. Send me a description by October 29 of what you'll be teaching in November/December, as well as any other topics you might want to discuss, and I'll try to put together a list. Bring a friend. * Volunteer needed to compile a list of internet resources for us, separating and sorting them into useful categories. * Send me a list of your favorite school year/summer physics activities, such as the Exploratorium workshop. Any extra information, contact number, will help. * Any volunteers to set up a meeting at a high school, college, or lab?
