Date: Thu, 17 Aug 1995 07:45:04 -0700 From: kstreet@holonet.net (Karen Street) August 10 Meeting Notes _______________________ These are the notes for a meeting held August 10 to discuss teacher participation in the Alliance. (1) Beginning in October, teachers, etc. are invited to a potluck 7 - 9 on the first Tuesday of each month at 1721 Rose St. Location may change/begin to rotate in January. The first month we'll discuss the advantages of beginning the school year with sound and light vs. the advantages of beginning with kinematics. We'll bring ideas, labs, demos and questions on these subjects. Everyone bring your list of interenet resources - there are scads out there. Each month we'll try to discuss curriculum appropriate to the month, plus a more general topic. In November, we may discuss kinematics and Bay Area resources. (2) Beginning immediately, any teacher with a question/request for help/idea can present it to the general alliance. Send it to physics-alliance@lbl.gov. Owen has agreed to answer as able, Karen and Pete are backups if the questions/requests go two or so days without a response. If this becomes an irritatingly frequent event, Fred will establish an address just for this purpose. Owen will get information about Oakland Unified School District's internet service - will they let the physics teachers on, how much will it cost, and what all kind of service does OUSD offer? Send anything you want added to our World Wide Web page, http://design.lbl.gov/education to JFKral@LBL.Gov via email, and he will install it for you. (3) We will assume that the universities/lab will host one meeting each semester. (4) We're thinking about meetings of more general interest, to be hosted by the high schools. One popular idea is practice using Interactive Physics. (5) We (who?) will contact the other groups to find out what they've been doing. In order to increase the teacher base, we will obtain the local list of the AAPT, and mail these teachers a description of the plans stated above, how to get us on the internet, how to subscribe to the alliance, etc. Additionally, during the last week of August, first week of September, we will contact the physics teachers at the following schools individually: Fred: Berkeley High, Arrowsmith Karen: Albany, Piedmont, Richmond district Owen: CPS, Oakland High, Oakland Tech, Skyline Pete: Alameda, Encinal, and the local Catholic schools If anyone in the Physics Alliance can notify teachers at one or more schools in the East Bay, please let them know what we're up to. As a minimum, get their name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Unrelated to the meeting: I'll be out of town August 18 - 28. Contact anyone at the meeting if you have questions. KUGELGEN@aol.com (Owen), vajk@netcom.com (Pete), jfkral@lbl.gov (Fred), kstreet@holonet.net (Karen) See you all in the fall. Karen
