December 6, 1994 East Bay Physics Alliance - Minutes of Meeting of December 2 and 3 __________________________________________________________________ Hello Insert_your_favorite_name_here (green) Group, This letter is to summarize the meeting of December 2 and 3. It is a supplement to the original letter put out by one of us. Our group is top heavy with scientists who want to help. This is a resource that we have less experience taking advantage of. One of our tasks is to find a way to use all this enthusiasm! The following concerns/desires were expressed: o A wish to meet at least once/semester in the east bay, with show and tell, make and take. o A wish to meet in small groups (say 7 - 10) with a researcher buddy, once/month. o Equipment sharing pool, from the university to the high school and between high schools. o Help getting E-mail and other Internet access. o Communication of resources available from the labs, etc.; this needs to be more than a letter in the mail - we need to find another way to communicate that. o Communication of needs of the schools to the university/lab. o Schemes for better outreach: the AAPT mailing list, the most successful method now, involves only 10% of high school teachers, almost no junior high teachers, and no elementary teachers. o Some forum for more general discussion of teaching concerns: is there a way we could work on/help with general teaching issues? What role can the local labs and universities begin to play in local education? o Help for university teachers from the high schools: professors from other groups talked about the number of ideas they got from high school and elementary school teachers. We had almost no professors in our group. Others of you remember other aspects of the discussion - what are they? I'm looking forward to seeing you again, with your friends. Maybe you could think about where in all this you want to be involved. Thanks again. See ya soon, Karen Street (using email account of Fred Kral) P.S. This is posted on our World Wide Web page. There are other goodies on the prototype East Bay Physics Alliance page, so take a look: http://design.lbl.gov/education/education-home.html Comments and additions are welcome (JFKral@LBL.Gov).
